Q: Christian books?
Do you have any recommendations for Christian books? I enjoyed "Mere Christianity" and "The Great Divorce" by C.S. Lewis, and I will certainly look into his other works. I am currently reading "The Jesus I Never Knew" by Philip Yancey. Do you have any suggestions for other authors/books? I'm 15, and I am able to understand nearly all of what I have read so far, but please no books on profound theology or in-depth philosophy that I'm not going to be able to comprehend. I want to read books that are difficult and will challenge me, and are thought-provoking, but nothing that's going to be way beyond my understanding.
Also, any suggestions of books about the Reformation or Martin Luther?
Thanks!
A: "Waking the Dead" by John Eldredge is really great. For books on Reformation or Lutheranism, I suggest you check out elca.org and click on resources; also augsburgfortress.org and Concordia Publishers are both specifically Lutheran publishers (I know, I work for a Lutheran church although Iamnot Lutheran). You could start with Luther's Small Confessions (it's available at Augsburg for about a dollar).
Q: What are some good wisdom, christian books for teens?
I want to know some good books for teens that are christians. I am a christian and haven't been acting like one. I need help. So all I want to know is some good wisdom, christian books for teens. If your going to list Mark Matlock...I already have. Give me some good ones if you can.
Thank You.
A: If you want wisdom, I would say start with the book of Proverbs or Song of Solomon in the Bible. They are full of truth and wisdom from King Solomon, who was granted wisdom by God. There are 31 chapters in Proverbs, so just read a chapter a day, and in a month, you will have experienced the whole book. It is surprising that ancient texts have so much relevance still today.
Q: Do you know of any good Christian books for teens ?
I have to write a report on a Christian book...i wanted to know of any good books that are inspirational and that have a good message ! for teens
thx
God Bless !
A: Frank Peretti's Veritas Project books (Hangman's Curse and Nightmare Academy) are great books that are hard to put down. His book The Oath is also very good and with a good message, however, it's not specifically for teens. He also wrote The Cooper Kids Adventure series about two siblings that travel the world with their archaeologist father and encounter a lot of strange things and many dangers and see God's hand of protection all the time. He also wrote some supernatural thrillers that deal with spiritual warfare plus - not specifically for teens - that are excellent - This Present Darkness and Piercing the Darkness.
Jerry B. Jenkins' novel called Hometown Legend is a really good and inspirational story. It was also made into a movie recently.
Though they are not specifically for teens, several authors have written really good stories like Lawanna Blackwell (Gresham Chronicles), Francine Rivers (The Last Sin Eater), Gilbert Morris (House of Winslow series) and Jane Peart (Brides of Montclair series).
CBD has a huge list of Christian books for teens that may help. They are usually pretty good. http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/easy_find?event=EBRN&category=Fiction&N=1110797&Ne=1000000&Nso=1&Nu=product%2Eendeca%5Frollup&format=1014644&Ns=product%2Enumber%5Fsold
FYI: Christy is by Catherine Marshall. She also wrote Julie.
Q: What are some Christian books you recommend?
So I'm going to the library tomorrow. I'm already planning on checking out "Blue Like Jazz" and "The Five Love Languages." Does anyone know of any really interesting or unique Christian books that I will not be able to put down? I don't care if it's a novel or a devotional, fiction or non-fiction. I just need some good, interesting summer reads. I'm getting married in a few weeks and I'm 23 years old if that helps! Thank you:-)
A: I really liked Blue Like Jazz... if you find that you like it, you might want to check out "Searching for God Knows What" by the same author.
Also, The Dream Giver by Bruce Wilkinson
Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis
Living a Purpose-Full Life: What Happens When You Say Yes to God by Jan Johnson
Christian Fiction:
The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis
The Bridge by Lisa Tawn Bergren
This Present Darkness by Frank Peretti

Q: Have any depression books from the Christian perpspective?
I'm teaching a series about defeating depression at my church. I've got some great secular books about depression but i was wondering are there any good CHRISTIAN books with scriptures discussing this issue.... give name and author if u know it. thanks
A: C.S. Lewis wrote some books dealing with the topic, especially after his wife died. Check out "The Problem of Pain" and "A Grief Observed."
Edited to Add: I would consider C.S. Lewis to be a great Man of God and he suffered from depression. It is because we are human. It happens and I commend you for tackling it and including a Biblical perspective. There are characters in the Bible who suffered from this as well. In fact, there is a great article in Time magazine this week that shows Mother Theresa dealing with feelings of inadequacy and depression.

Q: Are there any Christian-based books about puberty and talking to your children?
My son is starting to go through puberty. I have looked at all types of books to discuss what is going on with the changes in his body, but none of the books are based off of Christian principles. Most of the books say exploring with masturbation is quite alright and you should explore your body. They talk about homosexual feelings and sex, but no where in any of the books I checked out, did it say refrain from having sex and abstinance is the way to go. I want my son to have these old morals that are so long gone in the world. Being a single mom, I have to try and find a way to have the talk with my son and relate the information that I don't know about when it comes to the male body.
A: I haven't looked into this a great deal yet b/c my children are younger (3 & 4) I do have several books by Dr. James Dosbson & I just love them! & he has a great reputation! He has a book called "Raising Teenagers Right" I haven't read it, but knowing it's Dr James Dobson-I would highly recomend it. I also found an article by him regarding puberty:
http://www.christianindex.org/2094.article
You could also do a search for christian puberty books or talk to your youth minister or pastor.
You would also like "bringing up Boys" by Dr James Dobson. Not as much about puberty but so much more! Helps you understand how boys think!
best of luck.
Q: Why are most Christian paperback books so much bigger than regular paperbacks?
I'm talking about Christian fiction books. They're huge. I don't like that.. I like a normal-sized paperback that I can hold easily in my hand. Has anyone else noticed this?
A: Yeah. I have no idea why they do that. Unless maybe it is cheaper to print them that way. Really not sure though. I also find it annoying. I sometimes like to take a paperback with me and I like to put it in my back pocket. Can't do that with an over sized book.
Q: where do i go for free christian books to order?
i'm looking for free christian books were can i go.
A: Like all other books, you'll have to pay for them or borrow them. One other possibility is that the author, himself/herself, puts them online and allows them to be read for free.
There are some Christian books in the public domain (no longer under copyright) which you can read online. For instance:
-The Confessions of St. Augustine - http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/3296
-Martin Luther's 95 Theses - http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/274
-George MacDonald (many of them; he was a prolific writer and a pastor, he greatly influenced C.S.Lewis and also J.R.R. Tolkien) - some online include: Unspoken Sermons - http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/9057 and At the Back of the North Wind - http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/225 and Lilith - http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/1640 and Miracles of Our Lord - http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/9103 and Phantastes - http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/325 and The Vicar's Daughter - http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/9471 (and many others)
I hope this helps a bit.
Q: Do you know of any good Christian romance books or authors?
Right now I'm reading 'The Negotiator' by Dee Henderson. Do you have any other romance books or authors? Only Christian, please and thank you!
A: Lori Wick writes good Christian romance. My favorite book is The Princess. She also has many series. Janette Oke has lots of books that are considered romance. She writes mainly historical, and The Canadian West series is my favorite. Debby Giusti is a new author who writes inspirational romantic suspense. Her book is called Nowhere To Hide.
