Q: Islamic Culture?
What are the achievement of Islamic culture in medicine science, mathematics, literature, art, and architecture? Are they still advancing.

A: A long time go Islamic culture was the most advanced in the fields you specified. But unfortunately, not anymore. This is mainly due to the fact that the governments of Arab states simply do not invest in research and development. Either because they don't have the income needed, or they have so much income(i.e Kuwait), that they simply import technology from abroad. However there are several notable exceptions. Some people from the Arab world, who went to study abroad, have excelled ( eg the Egyptian scientist Ahmed Zewail, who won the Nobel prize in chemistry in 1999). However if these people had not left their countries, then i have no doubt that they would have achieved nothing. For more info check out the links.

Q: What are some of the contributionsthat Islamic culture has made to the West?
What are some of the contributions that Islamic culture has made to the West?

A: Math, Astronomy, Architecture...

Q: the Islamic culture is a comlicated one, can you explain to me the structures in Islamic societies?
the Islamic culture is a comlicated one, and I would like to get some understanding, can you explain to me the social structures in Islamic societies?

A: The basic social unit is the family, and its tribe. Loyalty and obedience beyond religious matters is determined within these social units. They are paternal and hierarchical. Honor is a key element of their social code, and any violation is quick to be noted and responded too, usually with violence. Honor is also a group concept that family members must uphold together. Arab society conducts itself by mean of a "shame" culture, unwritten but finely detailed customs that cannot be violated without incurring great personal shame, not just to the individual, but also to his extended family. Shame must be expunged; it is a stain that must be removed whatever the costs.

Q: How is culture reflected in arts of both Byzantine & Islamic culture?
How is culture reflected in arts of both Byzantine & Islamic culture? i mean it as 2 seperate questions like how is byzantine culture reflected in byzantine art and how is islamic culture reflected in islamic art

A: Byzantine art is not reflected in Islamic art. The mohammedans copied it. That is quite different.

Q: Libs & Dems When will you understand that we need to fight against the expansion of the Islamic culture?
When the Muslims force all women to wear a head scarf? When the Muslims force all women to wear a burkha? When the Muslims start enforcing Sharia law? When homosexuals and adulterous women are stoned to death? When the Muslims destroy your countries works of art and culture because they are not Islamic? When women are forced into arranged marriages? When slavery is re-legalized? When teachers are executed for educating children? When people are beheaded for their religion? Where will you draw the line? When these policies are being enacted in Europe? When these policies are being enacted in the Country on the border of your country? When these policies are being enacted in your own Country? Don't you realize that the Islamic expantionists will destroy everything that you cherish? Don't you realize that you and your kind will be the first ones to be beheaded? Do you despise the Judeo-Christian culture that has given you so much freedom that much? normobrian Are you stoned or brainwashed? Or are you a Moslem that wants us to believe that yours is the "religion of peace"? The religion of peace that has and is spread by the sword? " Look at countries like Lebanon, the UAE, Syria, Turkey, Palestine, Afghanistan, Jordan, Qatar, and a host of others. Women in those countries dress just like Americans. " I have seen pictures from those countries, Afganistan teachers are executed by the Taliban, the Burkha is a fact of life Jordan is plagued with "honor killings" Palestine is degenerating into civil war. Qatar and Syria are un democratic. Turkey is trying to keep a secular goverment. No I have not read the Koran. I have read The Sword and The Prophet, and The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Crusades. The Puritans were worse than Moslems?? Yes the Puritans had some quirks but find me a fundamentalist Christian country today that is as barbarous and backward as most Muslim nations are today.

A: I'm much more worried about the Fundamentalist Right wing Christians destroying the Christianity I grew up with-mine looks nothing like theirs. It wasn't judgemental-we aren't God. Everyone had their own churches-Presbyterian, Catholic, Lutheran and nobody ever thought we needed religion in school-we had church & bible school & bible camp. Everyone got along just fine.

Q: In Islamic culture is there no distinction between religious and governmental law?
I was just wondering if Sharia law was governmental law or extrajudicial law.

A: More in Iran or Saudi Arabia. Most Islamic countries have some degree of church (or mosque) and state. But in some Fundamentalists want an Islamic Fundamentalist theocracy to take over, including in Egypt and Pakistan. Turkey is a largely Islamic country with very strict anti-religious laws. Women there are not even supposed to wear the scarves worn by strict Islamic women, in public. There is freedom of religion, but the symbols must be kept private.

Q: Muslim women, how do you feel about the gender inequality in islamic culture?
I'm not trying to offend. Just want some opinions. Please don't answer with a question like "how do you feel about gender inequality in christian culture?" For your information, I think gender inequality is wrong in all cultures.

A: personally i was never confronted to that as a muslim woman so i dunno.

Q: What are two contributions of the islamic culture to the west?

A: From an academic perspective, Muslim scholars began obtaining Greek treatises and started their study and translation into Arabic a few centuries after the Hijrah (622 A.D.) They critically analyzed, collated , corrected and supplemented substantially the Greek science and philosophy. After this period began what is known as the Golden Age of Islam, which lasted for over two centuries. It is here we find many of the great scientists of Islam who literally left behind hundreds and thousands of books on the various branches of science. Abu Ali al-Hussain Ibn Abdallah Ibn Sina, universally known as Avicinna (980-1037), alone wrote 246 books, including Kitab-al Shifa (The Book of Healing) consisting of 20 volumes and Al- Qanun fit Tibb (The Canons of Medicine) . The Qanun was the chief guide for medical science in the West from the twelfth to the seventeenth century. Dr. William Osler, who wrote The Evolution of Modern Science, remarks "The Qanun has remained a medical Bible for a longer period than any other work". Containing over a million words, it surveyed the entire medical knowledge available from ancient and Muslim sources, and including his own original contributions. Ibn Sina's original contributions included such advances such as recognition of the contagious nature of phtisis and tuberculosis; distribution of diseases by water and soil and the interaction between psychology and health. Also, the book described over 760 drugs and became the most authentic of its era. Ibn Sina was also the first to describe meningitis and made rich contributions to anatomy, gynaecology and child health. Al-Khawarizmi also helped introduce Arabic numerals, the decimal position system, and the concept of zero. Algebra and Algorithm are in fact corruption's of his work and name. Interestingly, this first every book on algebra included many examples from the Islamic inheritance laws and how they could be solved using algebra. Under al-Mamun the caliph of the time, he with some others were the first to map the globe. In the field of Algebra the Muslims continued with Thabit Ibn Qurra's more general equations solved by geometrical arguments. In 901, Abu Kamil, called "the Egyptian calculator", did some work on algebra in which he established rules for manipulating algebraic expressions. He also proved various laws such as ax*bx-abx^2, a(bx)=(ab)x and (10-x)(10-x)=100+x^2-20x (Mirza, p124). Around 1000, Abu Bakr Al-Karaji, in his book The Marvelous discussed higher order equations such as fourth and fifth order equations, combing geometry and arithmetic. Al-Samawal established the power law x^nx^n=x^(m+n) in 1180 in his work The Shining which is just one of his 85 books. He also worked on performing multiplication of algebraic expressions involving terms with different powers and division of polynomials. Abu Yunus proved the famous identity cos(a)cos(b)={cos(a+b)+cos(a-b)}/2 and used spherical trigonometry to set formulas to computer prayer times. Al-Biruni also used spherical trigonometry to find the direction of Mecca or any other city on the globe. Not to mention my Dad's Ph.D thesis at NC State on photovoltaic cells (ie solar cells).

Q: Do we as a Nation understand the Islamic culture enough to enable us to Win the War of faux freedom in Iraq???
I live close to an Islamic enclave. And routeenly see women wearing Hajib being treated harshly by men that I assume are their husbands. The simple fact that I or other average Americans, see spousal abuse as morally wrong. While men of the Islamic persuasion sees this as moral highground. Is evidence of a vast difference in the way each culture views life and freedom. How can we ever be victors when winning envolves losing our morals.

A: It's beginning to look like the Iraqis had just what they wanted, torture, rape, slavery, and a police state. I'll believe they appreciate freedom when I see them stand up and fight for it. Does that mean we are supposed to accept and allow the mistreatment of someone in this country based on their religious beliefs as in treating women like cattle? Not necessarily. But don't the Islamic women have the same option of leaving the men who mistreat them that native born American women have? If an Islamic woman doesn't like being treated badly then she should just leave. If she's not allowed to leave or is kept captive then given the opportunity she should retaliate. Do I need to understand the Islamic culture to win a war for freedom in Iraq? No. Our men and women fought and gave their lives for the Iraqis freedom. If the Iraqis are not willing to take over that fight and stand up for themselves then let some other dictator come on in and beat the cr-p out of them all over again. It's their decision now. We already won their freedom. Now it's up to them to keep it or give it up.
