Q: Jewish dating?
what age do u have to be to date if u are orthadox jewish

A: Usually at about ages 18-21. Somewhere in there. Understand that Orthodox Jews date for marriage, and don't date casually at ALL. When my daughter gets out of high school, she'll go to seminary in Israel for a year (or two). When she's done there, she'll probably begin to date. She'll date boys she already knows something about, and boys who have been vetted by me and by her rabbi. She'll meet them in public places, and they won't touch. The dates might last all day--but she'll only date 5 or 6 times--and that's if they like each other. If there are problems any time during that process, the dates stop. If they like each other, by the 5th or 6th time, they'll be talking marriage. I know this isn't typical for today's world. And it's not even typical in the broader scope of Judaism--it's strictly an Orthodox way of doing things. But the boy & girl will be talking about issues of importance, and will make their decisions based (among other things!) on compatible beliefs and goals. Orthodox Jews don't have a perfect record when it comes to happy marriages--but it's pretty good, especially compared to secular society. Edit: I don't think I made it clear, because it sounds like my daughter will be dating many boys @ once. Not so--she'll hear of one nice boy, and 'date' him two or three times, then either decide to either get more serious, or wait until another nice boy shows up.

Q: We are Black parents with a 17yr old son who is dating a Jewish girl. Her parents are are against it. Help?
They have been dating for a year but the father wants them to be friends. He would prefer a white Jewish for her. My son is a great kid. I don't want to see him get hurt and this is getting to a breaking point. They asked him not to come over on Fridays but I think they don't want him over period.

A: This has nothing to do with your son's race. This girl is Jewish. According to Jewish law, her children will be Jewish. Her parents want their grandchildren to be raised in a Jewish home, which, for them, means that both parents need to be Jewish. Let this play out. At your son's age, most relationships do not last. Let him learn, let him heal, and help him to move on. Be well.

Q: What are you'r views on a jewish girl dating a muslim guy?
Im wonderng what are you'r views on this...Do you think it will be a long term or short term relationship and would the parents of the muslim guy approve of the jewish girl?

A: I think it's pretty normal. Because Jewish people and Muslim people have actually been like brothers and sister throughtout the history. (except for the things going on in Palestine these days) Christians and Muslims or Christians and Jews might have had serious conflicts in the past but never Muslims and Jews had a huge conflict (again except for Palestine). Even one of the respected Jewish people said, "I would pray to God at a mosque, because we believe in the same God" though I don't remember the exact person who said that. After all these facts I think it's pretty usual for a jewish girl to date a muslim guy. Good luck!

Q: Dating a jewish woman from Israel. Is there anything that I should or shouldn't do so I won't offend her?
I am reading about her culture and I don't want to stick my foot in my mouth (unknowingly) by saying or doing something to offend her. I want to treat her like I would any other woman with respect. I can tell that she is different than any other woman I have dated. I just want to make sure she has a great time. Do you have any advice?

A: Avoid politics. Among Israelis politics is a great area of dispute to the point of violence occasionally. Israelis are very sensitive to politics. I can't even crack an innocent joke here and there without receiving an offended response or say the word Arab without seeing eyebrows lift in disapproval. On the other hand I observe younger audiences are less into politics and less sensitive in this area. Usually you want to ask a lot of general questions to keep a fun conversation aloft.

Q: Started dating a Russian Jewish male, how is it different from dating or getting involved with other cultures?
I'm Catholic by birth. How is it different with someone with Jewish faith in terms of values, traditions when it comes to dating or having a relationship.

A: Here's an idea: ASK HIM. He'll love to tell you all about his culture. You reciprocate with your Catholic culture/religon/values and by the end of the day you'll both have learned something very important about each other.

Q: What is a dating relationship like for a jewish teenager?
My bible study is researching different cultures and how the teenagers date. So if you are a jewish teenager, tell me the general area in which you live, and how you date, and what kinds of restrictions you have. And include anything else that I might find interesting.

A: The gentleman above me had it almost 100% correct. To add more details: There are people called Shadkhanim who keep files or just try to remember lots and lots of young people who come to them looking for spouses. They may do this as a side hobby, or as a job. When you go to one, they ask you all about yourself and family background, then they ask you what you are looking for in a spouse. I've worked as a shadkhan, and will tell you what you say you want is ignored. It's usually not really what you want, but it is a useful description of how you see yourself. When a match sweems good, the shadkhan calls both families, if they agree it sounds good they discuss back and forth things that are important to them. If everything is okay on that front, the families then ask around and investigate each other. If everything is okay, the children are "red di shidikh" which is yiddish for "Read the match." If they like what they hear they meat, as the gentleman above said. Lithuanian Jews tend to meat in hotel lobbies for the first meating, then restraunts or fun activities later. Chasidim and Hungarians usually meet in a house and may go on a walk on later dates. On the dates they discuss plans for the future and goals in life, as well as friendly small talk. They do not touch or joke about personal things. When they are engaged, the engagement will last a month or two for Lithuanians, with the future spouses meating still about once a week or once every two weeks. In Chasidic families customs differ, but it's not uncommon for them to seperate for a year after engagement and not to have contact except an ocassional letter around holidays. When they get married, both sides of the wedding reward the shadkhan with a gift called shadkhanis. The custom is that it will be between 1,000 and 1,300 dollars from each side. I always set my fee at 1% of the wedding costs from either side, that way poor people pay what they can afford. In old families and important Rabbinical families, there is a different custom where the parents pick the spouse for the children. Usually the girl will have heard of the boy's reputation, as this custom is restricted to famous Rabbinical families and families renowned for piety. It is also likely they are related, often as close as first cousins, or double cousins. The current Grand Rabbi of Satmar was married this way to his cousin. His father had married his cousin as well, on the same side. (DOn't worry about birth defects, that family is long lived and are incredible geniuses. We should all have such "birth defects.") In these families, The groom holds what's called a chusin's tisch the night before the wedding. This is a big meal for his family and friends. The men sit at his table, and the women sit at his mother and future mother-in-laws table in another room or behind a curtain in the same room. At some point a crowd of hyper young women pull the hyper young bride through the room the chasin is siiting to get to the room the other table is in. At that point some member of the family points them out to each other. This is there chance to say no. Usually, to be honest, he can't really see her because he can't figure out which one is her. She sees him, as he's dressed distinctively. There's also a change in custom at these weddings from other Jewish weddings. Normally in Jewish weddings there's a ceremony called b'dekin, where the groom comes into a room where the bride is sitting. Makes sure she's the one he's expecting to marry, then pulls the veil over her face and moves out to where the wedding will be held to wait for her. This is to make sure nobody pulls the Rachel-Leah switcheroo from the Bible. In the weddings of the people we discussed, the groom does not do this part, rather an elderly relative acts as his representative. According to R' Moshe Feinstein, an important legal decisor in Judaism, this type of match making is the authentic custom of the Jewish people, and the normal way is a modern compromise to people's fears and worries.

Q: tips on dating a Jewish girl?
I got a date tonight with a really hot Jewish girl and i am Jewish nor have i ever met any Jewish people before. she is 19, any pointers?

A: I find Jewish are sooooooo attractive!!!! Go with your gut instinct! She sounds like a very nice girl and you sound very excited so there is not problem. Some Jewish people stick with traditions and values... so be careful what you say! Enjoy the experience!

Q: What are the Jewish traditions on dating?
Yeah. I don't practice Judaism yet, but I found out that my mom and grandparents are Jewish and my boyfriend is as well. [he practices the reformed form of Judaism?] I'm not sure how accurate websites are and my library has no books on it...

A: If your mother is Jewish then so are you. The only Jewish dating traditions are practiced by Orthodox Jews: They only date for the purpose of marriage, dating and engagements are kept short, a wedding date is set shortly after the engagement, and there is absolutely no touching before the wedding. The reform do not have any particular dating traditions.

Q: How strict are Jewish guys about dating non-religious women?
I'm interested in a Jewish guy - he's 35 and single - we live in an area with hardly any Jewish people. I'm Christian but only go to church on holidays. I don't mind at all what religion he is, but I'm wondering how strict those guys usually are about dating. He seems interested in me but hasn't asked me out. I realize there's more to it than religion . . .the poor guy is going to be single his whole life if he doesn't date outside his religion. There are seriously no Jews here.

A: It really depends. I'm a Liberal, so I have no issue dating outside of Judaism (my last girlfriend was a Pagan sweetheart), but if he's Orthodox it's... a lot less likely. This isn't due to him thinking you won't get into Heaven (Jews believe that the righteous of every nation will get there - so if you're a good person, your religion doesn't matter), but it's more a cultural thing. It also depends on him as an individual, though - I know one Orthodox boy dating a Muslim girl. As I'm sure you can imagine, neither has told the parents. Best of luck. Peace.
